Apart from this meeting UrbanGrowth has had a few focus groups on this document with some randomly selected people from suburbs around the Central to Eveleigh corridor (C2E) – you may have been one of them. As it stands there will not be an opportunity for the broader community to be involved in this part of the conversation directly with UrbanGrowth but if you have comments then the material is publically available so you can send UrbanGrowth your feedback on the questions they are seeking input on. Maybe set aside some time at your next group meeting to make people familiar with the Draft Concept document and see what people’s response to the questions UrbanGrowth has been asking in the focus groups. You can read an article about the community groups session I did for the South Sydney Herald in Early Central to Eveleigh timeframe and also see how the Hub reported some of the discussion at a subsequent REDWatch meeting on C2E RedWatch criticises Central to Eveleigh Corridor development.

The input from the focus groups will be used as input to urban design work UrbanGrowth will be doing over the next few months. The Draft Key Issues in the - Draft Concept and Key Issues summary - June 2014 are edited down from the 9 common themes identified in last year’s preliminary consultations. You can see them together in Central to Eveleigh - Common Themes and Issues on the REDWatch website. On top of last years list from the preliminary consultation was embedded participation but this aspect was missing from the discussion with community groups in June. Urbangrowth were understandably looking for input on the questions they were asking in other focus groups, but community groups were also looking also for information about what was happening, how consultation would be undertaken as well as the opportunity to input. REDWatch have provided UrbanGrowth with a note about our concerns and we have also written it up for public release – it is attached and will be on the REDWatch website.

At a minimum we would like to see a quarterly meeting with UrbanGrowth as happened under the RWA where community stakeholders were at least kept up to date about the project and what was happening. In an ideal world we would like UrbanGrowth to work with the community groups around the site to engage the broader community in a discussion about the corridor and their suggestions for its development – we think a community reference group would be a useful mechanism.

Conclusion

UrbanGrowth is developing its ideas on the Central to Eveleigh Corridor and it is important for surrounding communities to be aware of what is emerging and to encourage community discussion. Hopefully this email will help the process. In the absence of a broader communications strategy from UG on C2E it is also important for people with an interest in this site to share information so everyone is aware of what is happening and has the opportunity to participate.

UrbanGrowth is on this email list so that they see what material is being sent around this list.
