In their opening speeches, the candidates will answer 3 questions on the top issues determined by locals in our survey. They are:
1. What will your party commit to that will reduce the impact of climate change and speed up the transition from fossil fuels to renewables?
2. How will you ensure that there are guaranteed increases in public, social and affordable housing in all new developments and that these remain in perpetuity?
3. What will you do to improve the connectivity of public transport in NSW as well as increasing cycling and walkability in our urban areas?
You can see all the survey responses on FOE’s Facebook page<https://click.actionnetwork.org/ss/c/atcYNHk4Eh2YdGnwBh-YDPAZiEt8wwS6hp5wOIb3CiLML8oyP8l_h4y7oQEtE0m2KlNF2swJn5uRvke-IKETx4j7Oev9ogmLHRBMHf_wR0rkDxIflzm6BOYzX4leGY6O_a6DpI_Yn5FMrr62ksZqWfqVaWeWfTUO2cPk38rnoYxFnx_Ppm_N0cMYKfeEcJvvuBsmY7ZnccPgONBYXsPk9su8Q25Zs918l2Yt7NlMw8d1VCPZ3VPPoNNLVfZA4KTHNMGt7Iir0VgXxqyMcoNRXN9lFrDO_wYixG9EmNqnzcRf3OvCMO2ogXfagTKNI188W7eLPDMqobTyt8ytkkSWfzp07OHN6AXNt3YhbWMpnyXHXitlXu6oakzLj_JrQcZWqNDz2IOXn8x7o1Va-WuL52TurZpA7EW91GRJNntKF-2SPjhJJ0a2LYemKlkvi5teUIBiT1HX7kkKG6_5G4XavXvnhr2kaWQEXFpMMQO2rbBMRKE0N6T0JiiHhhmB46EM/3uf/1EeKW3H2TIixrhENXRrWAg/h5/fccwJZuqvcz8y_EnJdqZyUE_ZBdeHztG8v8mpUD5FPQ>.

Heffron State Electorate Candidates forum video
A joint Candidates forum for Heffron was held on February 8 2023 and you can see the video on the ARAG Facebook page here<https://www.facebook.com/AlexandriaResidentsActionGroup/videos/927399451588864>.
Regrettably, Ron Hoenig, the current member for Heffron, did not attend the February 8 2023 candidates’ forum and did not respond to offers to hold the event on different dates. Ron Hoenig also did not provide a response to the South Sydney Herald and was both the only ALP candidate and the only sitting member in the inner city not to provide a response for the SSH candidate guide.
Maybe he thinks a 15% margin insulates him from the long term changes that are seeing inner city seats move to the Greens and Independents. The Liberals, who usually run second in Heffron, put up candidates that also don’t normally participate in local events or do profiles for SSH either. They nominate in the electorates they think they can’t win, primarily to funnel votes on election-day into the upper house. Until Heffron becomes more marginal, both the major parties can ignore the local community in seats like Heffron.
These are the South Sydney Herald Heffron Candidates responses<https://southsydneyherald.com.au/heffron-candidates-nsw-election-2023/> from the candidates who wanted to let the community know what they think about important local issues.

Political Party policy positions on public, social and affordable housing
In the lead up to the 2023 NSW election, REDWatch held a forum on public, social and affordable housing policy. Representatives from the Liberal, Labor and Green parties participated. REDWatch offered the candidates the opportunity to place details of their policies on our website or to link to their policies. This is where we have put the responses<http://www.redwatch.org.au/redw/elections/230325redw>. We will add others if received.
Bridge Housing Presentation on Elizabeth Street Redfern
On 2 March 2023 Bridge Housing and Capella Capital presented to REDWatch on their plans for the 600-660 Elizabeth St Redfern Communities Plus site. The presentation is now on the REDWatch website as Bridge Housing Presentation on Elizabeth Street<http://www.redwatch.org.au/RWA/elizssd/230302bhp/view>. The presentation has been updated to take into account some questions asked at or after the meeting so the presentation is more self-explanatory.
Local Community Survey on impact of change and development
Council is working with City Futures Research Centre at UNSW undertaking a survey for people who live in three areas covering parts of Alexandria, Beaconsfield, Erskineville, Rosebery, Waterloo or Zetland area that are undergoing a lot of change. The survey excludes people living north of Buckland Street Alexandria and McEvoy Street Waterloo.
The survey is for local residents and workers. They want to know how you feel about life in your local community. As a local they want to know what’s important to you.
This online survey is available in English<https://cityofsydney.cmail20.com/t/j-l-eyuirhk-fttuklke-k/> and simplified Chinese<https://cityofsydney.cmail20.com/t/j-l-eyuirhk-fttuklke-u/>. You can also request a hard copy - call 02 9348 0751 for an English version, call 0424 005 855 for a simple Chinese version
This survey was last completed in 2020 as we went into Covid-19 lockdown. At that time more than 2,000 residents and workers responded. Since 2020 most of us have re-evaluated our values and goals.
Complete the survey and go into the draw to win 1 of 8 $100 Visa gift cards provided by UNSW.
Park and Open Space nation-wide use survey
The Australian Urban Design Research Centre (AUDRC) (based at the University of Western Australia) is currently conducting The Australian Park Life Survey to capture park, nature and public open space use across Australia. You can check out the survey here: https://australian.park-life.com
Results will be combined with our nationally standardised spatial layer of parks, reserves and public open spaces for all Australian state and territory capital cities. Results will also be shared with local governments to help them plan, design and maintain parks, reserves, nature spaces and public open spaces.
North Eveleigh Paint Shop Precinct update
New information
Since our initial report on the finalisation of the rezoning for this site some additional information has become available. Before TfNSW went into caretaker mode it updated its Redfern North Eveleigh Precinct Renewal web page and included links to the newsletter it would have distributed. The links to the new documents are:
* Community newsletter: Approval of the Paint Shop Sub-Precinct Rezoning Proposal (PDF, 1.4 MB)<https://www.transport.nsw.gov.au/system/files/media/documents/2023/RNEPR-230123-Paint-Shop-rezoning-determination-WEB.pdf>
* Paint Shop Sub-Precinct: Rezoning Proposal Approval - What we’ve heard & Where we’re heading (PDF, 989.13 KB)<https://www.transport.nsw.gov.au/system/files/media/documents/2023/RNEPR-230301-Updated%20Vision%20document_v4A.pdf>
* Also released by DPE since our last update are the planning control maps - Paint Shop Sub Precinct Rezoning Maps<https://shared-drupal-s3fs.s3.ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/master-test/fapub_pdf/NSW+Planning+Portal+Exhibitions/Paint+Shop+Rezoning+Maps.pdf> – these are the maps to go into the LEP so are large and the site sits on a page join meaning there are two maps for each LEP change.
North South Eveleigh connecting bridge dismissed
While the DPE finalisation report preserves a place for a connecting bridge to land (Fig 11 of the Design Guide) TfNSW appears to have hardened its view on the possibility, saying a bridge “does not provide time saving opportunities or convenience for users at this location”. REDWatch thinks that TfNSW will need to justify this statement when it comes out of caretaker. In full TfNSW says of Linking North and South Eveleigh:
Transport for NSW and TAHE acknowledge submissions from the community requesting a direct connection between North and South Eveleigh.
While a bridge is not part of the scope for the Paint Shop Sub-Precinct rezoning proposal, a potential future landing location was considered when developing the masterplan.
Subsequently, TfNSW and TAHE commissioned an engineering firm to investigate the potential for building a pedestrian bridge, reuse of existing or provision of a new tunnel connecting North Eveleigh to South Eveleigh. These investigations have found that the Redfern North Eveleigh Bridge will be a very challenging and expensive bridge to build and does not provide time saving opportunities or convenience for users at this location.
The proposed link between north and south Eveleigh remains the barrier-free access across the new southern concourse at Redfern Station, which will be in place when the concourse opens.
Crossing options will be at Redfern and Macdonaldtown Stations.
Issues reading Artist impressions of the amended project
In the artist impressions it looks like the park comes up to Wilson Street. This is not the case with buildings now proposed all along the Southern side of Wilson Street. West of the Shepherd Street entrance to the site there is supposed to be a 2 to 3 storey building but it appears as a park in the artist impressions. REDWatch now understands that the artist impression shows this building with a green roof hence it looks like it is part of the park. This building is lower than the other buildings proposed to try to allow maximum sunlight into the new main park. The TfNSW newsletter now has the park sign pointing at the park and not this building.
While residential has been increased along Wilson Street it is still not clear what the pink colour is in the amended proposal as the colours have changed from the exhibited proposal – it could be active frontages or it could be retail and community uses – we still don’t know. One of the changes in the finalisation report was to Night-time Economy/Precinct Activation “to include provisions to support and facilitate night-time economy uses and has extended hours of late-night trading”. This would expect to be within the site not on Wilson Street.
As more information has become available REDWatch has been updating our Facebook page <https://www.facebook.com/RedfernEveleighDarlingtonWaterlooWatch/> and our page on the Paint Shop Precinct Rezoning Determination<http://www.redwatch.org.au/RWA/statesignificant/northeveleigh/TfNSW/paintshoprezone/230224dpe>. You will also find a South Sydney Herald article on line at North Eveleigh Paint Shop Precinct rezoned<https://southsydneyherald.com.au/north-eveleigh-paint-shop-precinct-rezoned/>.
REDWatch April 6 Meeting
We are still organising speakers for our April monthly meeting at 6pm on Thursday 6th April. This meeting plans to focus on community mobilisation and change. We will let you know details closer to the date.
As a starting point you might like to have a look at this paper done by Amanda Tattersall and Kurt Iverson on Organising the 21st Century City - Full report (pdf, 632KB)<https://www.sydney.edu.au/content/dam/corporate/documents/henry-halloran-trust/organising-the-21st-century-city.pdf>. The study looks at five ways people in communities can change things.
