<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:6.0pt">Do we have to pull down the Waterloo public housing towers? It is a question that has been asked by Council and tenants with debate about what should happen with the towers leading to the initial redevelopment
being confined to the non-tower Waterloo South. Now a not for profit architecture and design firm, OFFICE, is undertaking a project to look at what might be done with the towers and they want to talk with the Waterloo public housing community.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:6.0pt">OFFICE is holding a <b>community BBQ to listen to residents</b> about what they would like to see for the future of Waterloo North Public Housing Estate. It will be held on
<b>2nd November 1-3pm Waterloo Green at Matavai and Turanga.</b><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:6.0pt">They are undertaking a project called Retain Repair Reinvest (RRR). RRR is a community-informed feasibility study that assesses the viability of refurbishment as an alternative approach to estate renewal. The

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:6.0pt">REDWatch is an incorporated body which means it has an Annual General Meeting that elects office bearers and members to its Coordination Group. REDWatch will be holding its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Thursday
November 7th 2024 at 7 pm at Counterpoint's Factory Community Centre 67 Raglan Street Waterloo. This is an in person meeting and there will be no Zoom link for this meeting,<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:6.0pt">At the AGM we receive a report from our office bearers and Co-ordination Group and elect the office holders (Secretary, Treasurer, Convenor, Spokesperson and Co-ordination Group members). There are opportunities
for job sharing or for understudying in roles like Convenor and Spokesperson.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:6.0pt">One of the challenges for a group like REDWatch is that we cover issues across four suburbs covering built environment and human service issues for both public and private residents. This means that finding people
happy to volunteer their time to help steer this work can be more challenging that organising a campaign were people are directly impacted by a development. On top of that we find younger people who become involved often get pushed out of the area due to the
high cost of housing or they move into jobs that make it difficult for them to also hold key roles in REDWatch because of potential conflicts of interest. This means we are always on the lookout for people who are willing to become more involved and pick up
some experience working across our diverse community.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:6.0pt">If you like what REDWatch does and want to know more, we suggest you have a read of

a forum on Loneliness in June 2023 and they have just released the report from that meeting as the

People or Profit? The use of critical systems thinking to diagnose and transform housing policy for health, wellbeing, and equity</a> is grounded in a single case study, the redevelopment of the Waterloo Social Housing Estate. As such it contains information
that will be of likely interest to some tenants, academics, activists and hopefully policy makers with an interest in Waterloo. It will be of special interest to those with a health wellbeing and equity focus. .<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:6.0pt">While as a thesis must, it is constructed within a contemporary academic theoretical framework, that makes it difficult to follow in places, it also includes some useful insights from interviews with project
stakeholders and the analysis of project documents, public policies, and stakeholder recommendations for change that should be of use even if you skip or don’t follow the theory.<o:p></o:p></p>
