Subject: [REDWatch Email] UrbanGrowth NSW & Central to Eveleigh

Dear REDWatch Members and Supporters

The NSW Government announcement about UrbanGrowth taking over a number of
redevelopment areas was made at a property council function. A video flyover
of Central to Eveleigh was shown at the function - see
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHcjReYFVc8 . Some of this footage was shown
on Chanel 9. You can see some stills from this this flyover on the REDWatch
website at Eveleigh - Before Urban Growth Indicative Built Form
<http://www.redwatch.org.au/RWA/corridor/140307ug1/download> and Eveleigh -
After Urban Growth Indicative Built Form
<http://www.redwatch.org.au/RWA/corridor/140307ug2/download> .

The Australian Financial Review ran an article Land freed for mass renewal
<http://www.redwatch.org.au/RWA/corridor/140308afr> reporting that the
Minister would make the announcement today. Late Sat morning the Minister's
media statement appeared on the UrbanGrowth NSW website and PDF copies
became available. You can see the media announcement at

There is also a Central to Eveleigh factsheet which shows UrbanGrowth doing
an expanded study over surrounding suburbs - Central to Eveleigh Urban
Renewal and Transport Program
<http://urbangrowth.nsw.gov.au/downloads/file/news/ProjectProfile-CentraltoE
veleighUrbanRenewalandTransportProgram.pdf> . UrbanGrowth NSW is also
taking responsibility for renewal in four other areas Newcastle Urban
Renewal and Transport Program

rbanRenewalandTransportProgram.pdf> , Parramatta Road Urban Renewal
<http://urbangrowth.nsw.gov.au/downloads/file/news/ProjectProfile-Parramatta

NorthUrbanRenewal.pdf> and Green Square Town Centre

eTownCentre.pdf> .

In an email to those involved in preliminary consultations last year, Tim
Poole, Project Director for Central to Eveleigh Urban Renewal and Transport
Program said:

"This announcement gives the green light to recommence community engagement
that started late last year. UrbanGrowth's mandate as the lead agency
responsible for coordinating other agencies will drive a whole of government
response to the complex challenges of building better cities. Firstly, I am
looking forward to working with you to develop long term vision and
objectives for Central to Eveleigh and surrounding neighbourhoods. We have
already received feedback from many stakeholders that the influence of
renewal of the rail corridor will extend over a wider area and that the
existing rich heritage, diversity and vibrancy of this part of Sydney needs
to be harnessed by future renewal and development. The new project name also
recognises the importance of public transport (in particular rail) in
delivering long term outcomes and the opportunities that future improvements
such as upgrading rail stations will provide for urban renewal. In the
coming weeks, additional information on the project will be available on the
UrbanGrowth website, including a record of community workshops held last
year. While Government has produced some indicative renewal concepts for the
purposes of marketing and media, there are no predetermined outcomes as we
are in the early stages of planning and will be seeking further strategic
input from you in the coming months".

The fly throughs were not shown to resident representatives in the
pre-Christmas consultation so clearly some more work has been undertaken
that has not yet been shown to residents. The fly through shows buildings
coming out of ATP heritage buildings and given the community and rail
heritage people have worked hard to preserve the Heritage on the Eveleigh
site it is difficult seeing this being acceptable. UrbanGrowth NSW now need
to make public their background work on the site and start consulting with
the community in a transparent manner.

It should also be noted that map for the Central to Eveleigh Urban Renewal
Area
<http://www.redwatch.org.au/RWA/corridor/CtEUrbanRenewalArea140308.jpg/view>
has been expanded to include the surrounding suburbs including the Redfern
and Waterloo public housing estates.

As we find out more about what UrbanGrowth is up to we will let you know.

Best Regards,

 MIke
