Dear North Eveleigh people

This email is to alert you to proposed changes in the planning system and to
invite you to a Planning White Paper Forum on Monday 27th May 2013 at
Redfern Town Hall from 6:30 - 8:30PM.

With the Draft Metro Strategy proposing to "support strategic renewal of
this highly accessible [Central to Eveleigh] corridor" development is likely
to be targeted in our area including in North Eveleigh as it becomes
available. As a result we have added the Global Sydney Precincts map to the
back of the flyer for Monday which is attached. Please pass the flyer on to
those that might be interested.

The Better Planning Network (BPN) now has over 380 community groups as
members and is providing a voice for these diverse community groups. The
Better Planning Network had a highly successful forum on Monday on the New
Planning System at Parliament House. The forum was opened by The Hon. Brad
Hazzard MP, Minister for Planning and Infrastructure. It was co-hosted by
The Hon. Luke Foley MLC, Shadow Minister for Planning and Infrastructure;
The Rev. The Hon Fred Nile, MLC, Parliamentary Leader Christian Democratic
Party & Assistant President, NSW Legislative Council, Mr David Shoebridge,
MLC, Greens NSW Spokesperson for Planning; and Mr Alex Greenwich, MP,
Independent Member for Sydney. The Master of Ceremonies for the forum was
ABC 7.30 NSW host Quentin Dempster. Minister Hazzard and Fred Nile were
among those that attended for the entire 4.5 hours of the forum.

You can get an idea of some of the issues by reading BPN Forum - Issues
Discussed <http://www.redwatch.org.au/govt/nsw/nps13/bpn/130520bpnr/view>
and the BPN Fact Sheet - Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD)
<http://www.redwatch.org.au/govt/nsw/nps13/bpn/130520esd/view> . You will
find more information on the new planning proposals REDWatch website under A

.

The Department of Planning are holding an extra Sydney briefing on 18 June
about the New Planning System but it is close to capacity - to register
visit www.planning.nsw.gov.au/events
<https://promo-manager.server-secure.com/ch/2196/pb8d1v/583064/650favyj4.htm
l> . ARAG put out a media release following the first information session
held by the Department of Planning and Infrastructure at Australian
Technology Park (Eveleigh) about the new planning framework on 15 May 2013 -
Changes to Planning in NSW may not mean better outcomes for the community
<http://www.redwatch.org.au/govt/nsw/nps13/130515arag> .

The Department have decided to push ahead with the Metro Plan Consultation.
BPN asked the Minister to withdraw the Metro Strategy and bring it back
after the new system was in place with the new community involvement
mechanisms. The Metro Strategy becomes the Regional Plan for Sydney in the
new system and it sets in place the main growth targets and plans for the
new system before the new system is in place. The Department have extended
the Metro Strategy consultation to end at the same time as the new Planning
system consultation - 28 June. The Department has just announced a small
number of public forums on the Metro Strategy. These are expected to fill up
quickly. The Metro Public Forum for Sydney CBD is on Saturday 22 June - to
register visit

spx. To find out more about what the Metro Strategy says about our area see
Metropolitan Strategy for Sydney 2031 - Sydney Regional Growth Plan
<http://www.redwatch.org.au/govt/nsw/nps13/ms2031> .

What does all this mean for Eveleigh, well part of the new system is about
getting people involved in decisions about the Metro Strategy, other
strategic planning processes and building codes in exchange for people not
needing to comment on up to 80% of developments in their neighbourhood. The
Metro Strategy proposing to "support strategic renewal of this highly
accessible [Central to Eveleigh] corridor" means we have to take a keen
interest in what the Government planning system is proposing because now is
when we get a say not necessarily later!

I hope you can make it along to the Community Forum on Monday at Redfern
Town Hall on these important changes.

Regards,

Geoff
