Subject: Queen St Median
Dear Resident
Thank you for your submission on the preliminary survey regarding a
potential median strip on Wilson St near Queens St.
The North Eveleigh Concept Plan, approved in 2008, committed to traffic
management measures to ensure a right hand turn is not permitted from Wilson
Street into Queen Street when exiting the site, subject to the approval of
the relevant roads authority (ie City of Sydney Council). This commitment
was made to address concerns from residents regarding the potential for
traffic from the North Eveleigh site using Queen Street as a short-cut to
King Street. A median was suggested as the only potential method to restrict
this movement.
However it is noted that:
. A median island would restrict the available routes for residents
when coming or going to their homes in Queen Street.
. Residents would not be able to turn right into or out of Queen
Street. This would therefore increase the number of U-turns occurring in
Wilson Street which is a safety concern.
. The median island would transfer traffic into adjacent residential
streets and therefore could impact on other residents in the area.
As you are aware, UrbanGrowth NSW Development Corporation (UGDC)
commissioned ARUP traffic consultants to carry out the survey of residents
in the area.
To summarise, 38 responses were received - 53% were supportive, and 47% were
opposed. Generally, the Queen Street residents were supportive of the
measure, however residents of Forbes Street were strongly opposed. The
results did not show a consensus among residents of the area about this
proposal.
UGDC has forwarded the results of the survey to the City for its
information. The City is the consent authority for all traffic and parking
treatments on City controlled roads such as Wilson Street.
The City has subsequently advised that a central median island on Wilson
Street would impact on the future cycleway along Wilson Street. The
cycleway in Wilson Street is one of the City's high priority regional
routes. The City does not believe that enough road space will exist to
enable the median island to be included.
It is for the above reasons that the City has advised that it does not
intend at present to consider a median island in Wilson Street near Queens
St.
The City has advised that it will continue to monitor traffic movements in
the area as development on the site progresses, and as the cycleway is
constructed. UGDC will assist Council where required.
