Exploring Waterloo tower options with OFFICE - 2nd November 1pm
Do we have to pull down the Waterloo public housing towers? It is a question that has been asked by Council and tenants with debate about what should happen with the towers leading to the initial redevelopment being confined to the non-tower Waterloo South. Now a not for profit architecture and design firm, OFFICE, is undertaking a project to look at what might be done with the towers and they want to talk with the Waterloo public housing community.
OFFICE is holding a community BBQ to listen to residents about what they would like to see for the future of Waterloo North Public Housing Estate. It will be held on 2nd November 1-3pm Waterloo Green at Matavai and Turanga.
They are undertaking a project called Retain Repair Reinvest (RRR). RRR is a community-informed feasibility study that assesses the viability of refurbishment as an alternative approach to estate renewal. The aims of Retain Repair Reinvest are:

* Retain existing communities by not relocating residents

* Repair existing buildings to reduce carbon emissions

* Reinvest savings to improve comfort and upgrade public housing

OFFICE will conduct a feasibility study and design proposal - including environmental analysis, full costings, and architectural scheme.
"The RRR project has been running for three years and in this time three feasibility and design proposals have been completed. Each feasibility study has involved extensive community engagement with public housing residents to inform the direction of each project. We are eager to work closely with residents on this study and hear what they want for the future of Waterloo North.
OFFICE is a not for profit architecture and design firm, as a registered charity, OFFICE's operations, processes and outputs are bound by a constitution to make projects for the public good. Feel free to contact us: hello at OFFICE.org.au"
REDWatch Informal get-together prior to AGM - 7th November 6pm
Before the formalities of our AGM at 7pm, we will have an informal catch up and nibbles from 6pm. Feel free to bring something to share, but we will ensure there is plenty to go around. The purpose of the pre-meeting catch up is for the REDWatch community to come together, share some nibbles, chat, and get to know one another better.
This would be a good opportunity for people who would like to become more involved in REDWatch or who want to find out more about what we do to come along and meet people.
REDWatch AGM 7th November 7pm
REDWatch is an incorporated body which means it has an Annual General Meeting that elects office bearers and members to its Coordination Group. REDWatch will be holding its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Thursday November 7th 2024 at 7 pm at Counterpoint's Factory Community Centre 67 Raglan Street Waterloo. This is an in person meeting and there will be no Zoom link for this meeting,
At the AGM we receive a report from our office bearers and Co-ordination Group and elect the office holders (Secretary, Treasurer, Convenor, Spokesperson and Co-ordination Group members). There are opportunities for job sharing or for understudying in roles like Convenor and Spokesperson.
Membership must be current to nominate for a position or vote and participate in the AGM. Please email your Nomination for Office-Bearer Position Form<http://www.redwatch.org.au/redwatch/incorporation/nom_office/view> (and membership form if you are not a member) no later than the day before the AGM to mail at redwatch.org.au<mailto:mail at redwatch.org.au> to help us ensure a smooth AGM!
Non-members are welcome at the AGM but only members can vote.
REDWatch is looking for people to be actively involved
One of the challenges for a group like REDWatch is that we cover issues across four suburbs covering built environment and human service issues for both public and private residents. This means that finding people happy to volunteer their time to help steer this work can be more challenging that organising a campaign were people are directly impacted by a development. On top of that we find younger people who become involved often get pushed out of the area due to the high cost of housing or they move into jobs that make it difficult for them to also hold key roles in REDWatch because of potential conflicts of interest. This means we are always on the lookout for people who are willing to become more involved and pick up some experience working across our diverse community.
If you like what REDWatch does and want to know more, we suggest you have a read of REDWatch Overview: Why, How and What we Do<http://www.redwatch.org.au/redwatch/about/230605redwwhw/view>. If you would like to discuss the possibility of becoming more involved then please contact Geoff Turnbull the Spokesperson or one of the other Coordination Group members. We are happy to mentor people so they can take on key roles in REDWatch be they in officers' positions or helping establish and run our website and social media etc.
As someone who cares about REDWatch, if you are unable to become more involved in REDWatch you can still actively talk to others about the importance of REDWatch and the value of community participation. Please talk to people you know who might be interested in what we do.
REDWatch Membership
While many people just get our email updates and come along to meetings that interest them, REDWatch is an Incorporated Not for Profit Association and has a membership. Membership fees are $2 a year and membership fees are now due. If you are not a member, or have let your membership lapse, now is a good time to consider being a member.
Full membership is open to those who live or work in Redfern, Eveleigh, Darlington and Waterloo and immediately adjoining suburbs. Outside this area people can support our work by becoming Associate Members. You will find a Membership Form<http://www.redwatch.org.au/redwatch/incorporation/membership/view> and the REDWatch Incorporated - Rules of Association<http://www.redwatch.org.au/redwatch/incorporation/rules/view> on our website in the REDWatch Incorporated & Membership<http://www.redwatch.org.au/redwatch/incorporation> section.
Completed membership forms can be emailed to mail at redwatch.org.au<mailto:mail at redwatch.org.au> , dropped in to Navin Lamsal at Counterpoint's Factory Community Centre or provided in person prior to the AGM. We can arrange for two members to sign if you can't find anyone! You can either drop in $2 with the form or pay it electronically directly into our bank account by EFT: Our Bank Account details are:

Please put your name in the information/reference field of an EFT so we know who you are.
If you have any payment difficulties, please email treasurer at redwatch.org.au<mailto:treasurer at redwatch.org.au>
Donations to REDWatch are always welcome
REDWatch relies on membership fees and donations to cover our costs rather than conduct separate fundraising activities that take away time and effort from our day to day work. REDWatch is an unfunded volunteer organisation and no one is paid to do REDWatch work. Donations to help fund other things we have to pay for, like our website, are always welcome. Our website tells you how you can make a donation<http://www.redwatch.org.au/redwatch/support> or pay membership fees directly into our bank account. We are however not tax deductable.
REDWatch loneliness meeting follow up and resources
At the October 2024 meeting of REDWatch we had a Loneliness Social Prescribing and Wellbeing - Presentation<http://www.redwatch.org.au/RWA/humanservices/wloohs/241003redw/view> from Jane Massa from Sydney Local Health District (SLHD). Jane is based at the Redfern Health Centre and is the Coordinator Suicide and Depression Prevention, Older People which is part of the Towards Zero Suicides Program. You can see a recording of the presentation on the REDWatch YouTube channel - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RCG6TIgHQXo.
In preparing for that meeting REDWatch spoke to a number of people in the field and has put together some Resources on Loneliness and Social Prescription<http://www.redwatch.org.au/RWA/humanservices/wloohs/241003redwr>. These resources contain not only background information about loneliness and social prescription but also details of services within the health system that are currently available that may be useful for people who need a greater level of assistance.
Also Sylvie Ellsmore (City of Sydney), Sydney Alliance, Wayside Chapel, the Coalition of Caring for Community Centres (4CCCs), Inner Sydney Voice and the Greens, co-hosted a forum on Loneliness in June 2023 and they have just released the report from that meeting as the Ending Loneliness in the City Community Forum Summary Report<http://www.redwatch.org.au/RWA/humanservices/wloohs/241031cse/view>.

In preparing for a walking tour around Waterloo<https://www.festivalofurbanism.com/events/fou2024/friday-walking-tour-redfern-to-waterloo> for the Henry Halloran Research Trust<https://www.sydney.edu.au/henry-halloran-trust/> at Sydney University's Festival of "Public" Urbanism 2024<https://www.festivalofurbanism.com/events/fou2024>, REDWatch pulled together some resources that people can use themselves to explore some of the heritage of Waterloo.
To find more about the area's heritage you can explore sites on The NSW Heritage Inventory<https://www.hms.heritage.nsw.gov.au/App/Item/SearchHeritageItems?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTAAAR0kNjxsnQk-oiiT49qumE4oR8060shlCf_cVbwuj7tVu4Te54x7qL-2ASg_aem_Phye94SB_lz9ePYUKmTdTA> (search your suburb) and also consult The Dictionary of Sydney<https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fdictionaryofsydney.org%2F%3Ffbclid%3DIwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTAAAR2OBjNaawlaDIiqjDr7cr_iGFRAcdpPEUZ97EYiRcVYVHiEM_Z2AYEIjYg_aem_AiqOy3eZk9dQ6uDMviRAQw&h=AT0kXp0TIg-Z9myNA5xP0X3BuANf2V6hIewf_lt51SZE29AK_VHb1na_IWI8T40iq110-o-DgpdMgtLJfGSz3tp98lRBY6lqWkDD9EaLrdQbyvFelu-Gx6gERusdy4i4Fw&__tn__=-UK-R&c%5b0%5d=AT0xKuxbEXwDITtAU1bptveIRqUGkM1xDHXfPgKNCVYaYeI1ZmUsHjmCgsboI-SmSp-moq0AIzmJsqR2RTjjQW8npbAg0HwbOpp9YAIQrOYgyv7mmIG3MhBAe891G5WHBBn7K2kLia5M6OswFqJAUzidn70IGtD4BOzntRRfFx_U4TEraSFZ-a5e-sTbPd4ESvgpgLeLr6zae8sZg8XdKkP3gL4>. On the REDWatch website you will also find a 2021 Sydney LGA public housing map<https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.redwatch.org.au%2Fissues%2Fpublic-housing%2Fredevelopment%2Fcosuds%2F210506cos%3Ffbclid%3DIwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTAAAR28GlI_3r5S9EcDRgtluv4BuH7L0RLm7x04hnKv-wRfgcuN-zTlrPYhwUU_aem_4rwMTy6FewVE_yTSaINeVQ&h=AT3V7ZMFcnAwTGObss2l3sBFN-0r0uBoX7hmxNtEvGMBrm5VfoOg3xSlnKDNy2FNfyh-_eWBJcGDrvLFszEo6fU_oHn-xMOI_uWrypjODW2a7qIISoamuKJG2IsGvRJQ7Q&__tn__=-UK-R&c%5b0%5d=AT0xKuxbEXwDITtAU1bptveIRqUGkM1xDHXfPgKNCVYaYeI1ZmUsHjmCgsboI-SmSp-moq0AIzmJsqR2RTjjQW8npbAg0HwbOpp9YAIQrOYgyv7mmIG3MhBAe891G5WHBBn7K2kLia5M6OswFqJAUzidn70IGtD4BOzntRRfFx_U4TEraSFZ-a5e-sTbPd4ESvgpgLeLr6zae8sZg8XdKkP3gL4> which shows where public housing properties are in the LGA. On that map you will see the extent of public housing properties held by Homes NSW in the Waterloo Conservation area when the Green Bans stopped the expansion of the Waterloo Estate.
Also see Preserving Waterloo's History: Oral Interviews and Community Engagement<https://waterloo2017.com/preserving-waterloos-history-oral-interviews-and-community-engagement/> which contains a video and report on Waterloo history based on 50 interviews. This part of the oral history project on the history of the suburb of Waterloo commissioned by the NSW Land and Housing Corporation and the Department of Family and Community Services in 2017.
David Lilly's Interesting Waterloo redevelopment research
David Lilley's thesis People or Profit? The use of critical systems thinking to diagnose and transform housing policy for health, wellbeing, and equity<http://hdl.handle.net/1959.4/103259> is grounded in a single case study, the redevelopment of the Waterloo Social Housing Estate. As such it contains information that will be of likely interest to some tenants, academics, activists and hopefully policy makers with an interest in Waterloo. It will be of special interest to those with a health wellbeing and equity focus. .
While as a thesis must, it is constructed within a contemporary academic theoretical framework, that makes it difficult to follow in places, it also includes some useful insights from interviews with project stakeholders and the analysis of project documents, public policies, and stakeholder recommendations for change that should be of use even if you skip or don't follow the theory.

Geoff
