Ending Loneliness - REDWatch 6pm Thursday 3 October 2024
The October REDWatch meeting will focus on loneliness and what can be done to help address it. Loneliness is a big challenge in our community. As we reported in the last update, the survey of Waterloo tenants showed high levels of loneliness on Waterloo's public housing estate - 28% of respondents reported feeling lonely often, and 36% felt lonely some of the time.
Join us and our guest speakers as we explore some of the resources and programs that can help tackle social isolation and understand how we can be part of solutions to this challenge in our community.
The REDWatch meeting is at Counterpoint's Factory Community Centre, 67 Raglan Street, Waterloo. It will also be possible to join online via Zoom although material handed out at the meeting will not be available online. The Zoom link is http://tinyurl.com/RedwatchMeetingZoom<https://tinyurl.com/RedwatchMeetingZoom?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTAAAR2jXy00rj4ZTmS8E61qnfLi-wRpfLEZi1QxIj7mqxCB1vlCXv4lfh5n55M_aem_Mhg8NRatO8ipMKcT3ZfuAg>.
This session might be of particular interest to the Waterloo Peer Navigators, NAB representatives and those working with service users. You can spread the word about this meeting with the Creating Opportunities to end loneliness - Oct 3 2024 flyer<http://www.redwatch.org.au/eventnotice/241003redwp/view>.
In thinking about this issue, you might like to visit the Ending Loneliness Together<https://endingloneliness.com.au/> website. Helping address social isolation is one of the aspects also covered by ASPIRE (Australian Social Prescribing Institute of Research and Education<https://www.creatingopportunitiestogether.com.au/>), where prescribing social activity in areas of interest can help address many health issues, including loneliness. In our area the Central and Eastern Sydney Primary Health Network (CESPHN) funds a Social Rx<https://www.pccs.org.au/social-rx/> service run by Primary and Community Care Services that can be accessed through your GP. They also fund the Older Persons' Wellbeing Network (OPWN)<https://www.anglicare.org.au/community/mental-health-services/older-persons-wellbeing-network/> run by Anglicare.
For older people there are services like Sydney Local Health District's Older People's Mental Health team. The City of Sydney has a Community Services Worker who provides and facilitates a diverse range of recreational and social support services that promote health, wellbeing, social connection and resilience. More information about both these programmes will be available at the meeting.
So come along to the REDWatch meeting on Thursday to hear about what can be done to help tackle loneliness.
More new Social Housing sites announced.
Three sites across Woolloomooloo, Sydney Olympic Park and Hurstville will be transferred to Homes NSW to deliver nearly 600 homes, with more than 50 per cent anticipated to be social homes. The new sites are part of a second tranche of ten government-owned properties that have been confirmed to deliver almost 1,100 new homes as part of the government's land audit.
The aspiration that of half the housing to be delivered on the new Homes NSW sites will be social housing is welcomed as in the first tranche the 50 per cent included both social and affordable housing.
You can read more in the media release Property audit delivers more sites for over 1,100 new homes<https://www.nsw.gov.au/media-releases/property-audit-delivers-more-sites-for-over-1100-new-homes>.
Please provide Referral Feedback during September 2024.
A reminder from our last update. In September, the Waterloo Human Service Collaborative (WHSC) is asking agencies to focus on their referrals and how they might be improved. As part of this the Collaborative is running two surveys to better understand referral practices for Waterloo clients and how referrals can be improved. One survey is aimed at service users, while the other focuses on agencies and their staff who make and receive referrals. The survey links are:

  * For agencies and agency workers: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/F5JBNWH
  *   For residents https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/F5SJDVV
The Collaborative wants agency workers to actively connect service users with the services they need. Getting feedback on referrals made and received plays a pivotal role in making sure service users are linked to the correct services quickly, thus minimising the number of times they need to retell their story.
For more information see: Tell us about your experience of referrals in September<https://waterloo2017.com/2024/08/19/tell-us-about-your-experience-of-referrals-in-september/> on the Collaborative's website www.waterloo2017.com<http://www.waterloo2017.com>.
So if you have been referred by an agency to another agency or you are in an agency dealing with referrals then the Collaborative wants to hear from you by completing the survey.
To support this initiative, the Collaborative has produced Service Access Resources<https://waterloo2017.com/service-access-copy/> like the Active Linking Model and Resources, the Waterloo Community Navigators Tool Kit, Service Directories and the Customer Service <https://waterloo2017.com/customer-service-toolkit/> Toolkit, all are conveniently accessible at www.waterloo2017.com<http://www.waterloo2017.com>.

Geoff
