North Eveleigh's Clothing Store Precinct - Homes NSW Presentation - REDWatch 6pm Thursday 5 September 2024
On Thursday 5th September at 6pm Homes NSW will discuss the future of the North Eveleigh Clothing Store Precinct.
Homes NSW is taking over responsibility for the development of housing on this site to deliver around 500 homes, half of which would be social and affordable housing, for more information see Clothing Store Precinct North Eveleigh - Now Homes NSW Social and Affordable Housing Development<http://www.redwatch.org.au/RWA/statesignificant/northeveleigh/necs/necshnsw/240701govt>.
Homes NSW will present to a REDWatch meeting at Counterpoint's Factory Community Centre, 67 Raglan Street, Waterloo. We are meeting in Waterloo as we can do a hybrid meeting so people can also join on line via Zoom - http://tinyurl.com/RedwatchMeetingZoom<https://tinyurl.com/RedwatchMeetingZoom?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTAAAR2jXy00rj4ZTmS8E61qnfLi-wRpfLEZi1QxIj7mqxCB1vlCXv4lfh5n55M_aem_Mhg8NRatO8ipMKcT3ZfuAg>.
The controls for the site are still those of the 2008 Concept Plan. The only work undertaken since then was an access road different to the concept plan and the building by City West of the Platform Apartments.
So join us to hear about Homes NSW's plans and ask your questions or raise your concerns in this early discussion. You can share information about this meeting by forwarding this email or sharing the REDWatch Facebook post<https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=906053731551489&set=a.460968159393384>.
There will also be a brief update by Homes NSW on the Waterloo Redevelopment Consortium where Homes NSW is finalising negotiations. (For background see REDWatch Unpacks the Stockland Consortium Waterloo Redevelopment Announcement<http://www.redwatch.org.au/RWA/Waterloo/lahc22-23/240812redw>).
Northcott Pet Day - Ward Park - Saturday 7 September 2024
On Saturday 7 September the City is hosting Northcott Pet Day at Ward Park, Surry Hills in partnership with RSPCA NSW, Cat Protection Society of NSW, Counterpoint Community Services and local vet clinics to provide free pet health services for social housing residents living in the City of Sydney local area.
Eligible residents can access free vaccinations, microchipping, flea and worming treatments, as well as booking in for free de-sexing for their pets. There will also be pet giveaways, music, information stalls, raffle prizes, free pet tag engraving, a photo booth and face painting. Food trucks will also be providing free lunch and coffee while stocks last.
Please note that City of Sydney residents will need to present their pension or healthcare card on the day to access free vaccinations, microchipping, and de-sexing appointments.
Following the unfortunate cancellation of Redfern Waterloo Pet Day in June, Council is increasing services at Northcott Pet Day this year. If residents need assistance to get to the event they can contact Laura Kelly at lkelly at cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au<mailto:lkelly at cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au> or directly on 9246 7883 to book a seat on the free shuttle bus, transport bookings are essential by Thursday 5 September.
Hudson & Vine Streets Redfern Mixed Use Redevelopment Proposal - 10 September 2024
Consultation is currently underway for a development to the north of Redfern's Block. The site is bounded by Vine Street, Eveleigh Street, Hudson Street and Evans Lane and is proposed for a mixed use 3-6 storey development.
Planning for the area around The Block, including this site, was taken from Council by the Redfern Waterloo Authority (RWA) in 2006 and declared State Significant, hence its planning is dealt with by the state government rather than Council. The RWA gave the site height controls of 3 and 5 storeys and the developer is looking for an increase to 5 to 6 storeys. The planning controls allow a Maximum Floor Space Ratio (FSR) of 3:1 which the initial proposal meets. The controls also put a maximum FSR of 1:1 for any residential development and the proposal comes in below this control.
The developer has applied for the Planning Secretary's Environmental Assessment Requirements (SEARs) and its application, initial plans and SEARs can be found on the planning website as Hudson Vine Mixed Use Redevelopment (SSD-70066710)<https://www.planningportal.nsw.gov.au/major-projects/projects/hudson-vine-mixed-use-redevelopment>.
In a letter to residents, from their client Shepherd Street Pty Ltd, Ethos Urban described the proposal as for the development of a mixed-use site with street frontages at 2-14 Vine Street, 16-30 Vine Street and 32- 34 Eveleigh Street, Redfern.
The application is seeking approval for:

  * Construction of two new mixed-use buildings, of which one will be 3-6 storeys and the other 2-6 storeys, and basement car parking with approximately 26 spaces.
  * The building to the western end of the site will comprise retail and commercial uses.
  * The building to the east of the site will include a mix of ground-floor commercial and retail, and approximately 23 residential apartments at the upper levels.
  * A new pocket park fronting Eveleigh Street.
  * External landscaping and public space, including a new through site pedestrian link at the centre of the site connecting Hudson Street and Vine Street and providing a new space for a cafe or bar with outdoor seating.
  * Seeking to attract a diverse community, whilst retaining tenants from the tech, arts, and creative industries.
A community webinar will be held 6pm - 7pm Tuesday 10 September and include a presentation from the project team, and opportunity to ask any questions and discuss any feedback you may have. Registrations are essential via https://tinyurl.com/16vinestwebinar.
A Social Impact Assessment (SIA) Survey is being conducted until 15 September and community input is requested. The SIA aims to identify, predict and evaluate the likely social impacts arising from a project and propose responses to the predicted impacts. You can complete the SIA Survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/16vinestsurvey.
Those with an interest in The Block precinct are encouraged to have a look at this proposal and comment.
Council Elections - 14 September 2024
If you missed the Sydney Lord Mayor Candidate's Forum and want to know what the candidates think about the key issues identified in the local community you can still see it on the Friends of Erskineville, Alexandria Residents Action Group or REDWatch Facebook pages<https://www.facebook.com/friendsoferskineville/videos/1771427860056597>.
In its September issue the South Sydney Herald is also running profiles on mayoral candidates which you can see also on line as - Meet your candidates for Lord Mayor<https://southsydneyherald.com.au/meet-your-candidates-for-lord-mayor/>. Most of the mayoral candidates head up tickets for Council and could also be elected as Councillors.
To see the full details of who is on the individual tickets and those standing just for Councillor, visit the Sydney LGA page of the NSW Electoral Commission<https://elections.nsw.gov.au/elections/find-my-electorate/councils/sydney> which also has polling places.
Please provide Referral Feedback during September 2024.
In September, the Waterloo Human Service Collaborative (WHSC) is asking agencies to focus on their referrals and how they might be improved. As part of this the Collaborative will run two surveys to better understand referral practices for Waterloo clients and how referrals can be improved. One survey is aimed at service users, while the other focuses on agencies and their staff who make and receive referrals. The survey links are:

* For agencies and agency workers: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/F5JBNWH

*         For Residents https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/F5SJDVV
The Collaborative wants agency workers to actively connect service users with the services they need. Getting feedback on referrals made and received plays a pivotal role in making sure service users are linked to the correct services quickly, thus minimising the number of times they need to retell their story.
To support this initiative, the Collaborative has produced Service Access Resources<https://waterloo2017.com/service-access-copy/> like the Active Linking Model and Resources, the Waterloo Community Navigators Tool Kit, Service Directories and the Customer Service <https://waterloo2017.com/customer-service-toolkit/> Toolkit, all conveniently accessible at www.waterloo2017.com<http://www.waterloo2017.com>.
For more information see: Tell us about your experience of referrals in September<https://waterloo2017.com/2024/08/19/tell-us-about-your-experience-of-referrals-in-september/> on the Collaborative's website www.waterloo2017.com<http://www.waterloo2017.com>.
Loneliness and Social Prescription
The survey of Waterloo tenants showed high levels of loneliness on Waterloo's public housing estate - 28% of respondents reported feeling lonely often, and 36% felt lonely some of the time. The Collaborative has produced a Waterloo Community Navigators Tool Kit<https://waterloo2017.com/service-access-copy/#htoc-waterloo-community-navigators-tool-kit> which is aimed to assist agency workers and volunteers help people to navigate to services. Not all signposting however needs to be to human services. For areas like social isolation it is often about matching people's interests with others who share that interest. Increasing wellbeing checks on people is hence often also about "social prescription". At a recent conference we were introduced to ASPIRE (Australian Social Prescribing Institute of Research and Education<https://www.creatingopportunitiestogether.com.au/>).
The ASPIRE website is worth a look for those interested in how social prescribing can address the social determinants of health. While much of discussion is about how social prescription can be done on a large scale, those working in local communities know about many of the social groups and activities that people can be introduced to within their local community. For those who do this as part of their local work, the ASPIRE website might provide some ideas of how we do this better at a local level.

Regards,

Geoff
