Meet the Stockland Consortium - 6pm October 2 - Tonight
This is a last-minute reminder that REDWatch has the Stockland Consortium members attending tonight's meeting - so this is a chance to meet the Community Housing Providers, as well as Stockland. Stockland will also talk about the consultation it is starting on the Concept Plan it needs to develop and put to the Department of Planning as the next step in the Waterloo South redevelopment.
The REDWatch meeting is at 6pm on Thursday 2nd October 2025 at Counterpoint's Factory Community Centre, 67 Raglan Street, Waterloo or join us on line by Zoom http://tinyurl.com/RedwatchMeetingZoom. A flyer for the event is on REDWatch's Facebook page<https://www.facebook.com/RedfernEveleighDarlingtonWaterlooWatch/> to share to promote the event.
In the last email update we provided some background on the issues to be considered in the Concept Plan that Stockland needs to produce. REDWatch is the only group that regularly meets outside business hours so that interested tenants, residents and agency workers can meet to explore issues such as the Waterloo South Redevelopment.
Waterloo Metro's "Badumurru Place" - name comment until 26 Oct
The new square on the Waterloo Metro Quarter is proposed to be called Badumurru Place. An application for this place name has been lodged with the Geographical Names Board. The proposal is open for submissions via its website<https://proposals.gnb.nsw.gov.au/currentproposals/0d79c3cf-7675-4d5c-a53d-b6cdea08fee6> until 26 October 2025.
The entry on the Geographical Names Board says: Badumurru (pronounced Bah-Doo Moor-Roo) is derived from the Gadigal language and translates to "water pathway". This name recognises the cultural and environmental significance of the wetlands and waterways historically connected to the Waterloo and Redfern areas. Badumurru combines the words Badu (water) and Murru (path), reflecting the deep relationship with Country and traditional practices of movement, gathering and connection. These water systems once served as vital transport routes, with Nawi (traditional canoes) used to move people and resources and maintain family ties across the region.
Proposed changes to the City of Sydney affordable housing program - Until 7 Oct
The City of Sydney has on exhibition its plan to strengthen the income contributions for the delivery of Affordable Housing. Council is seeking community feedback on the proposed update to affordable housing contribution rates and requirements. The changes proposed can be found at here<https://www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/policy-planning-changes/your-say-proposed-changes-city-sydney-affordable-housing-program> where you can read the supporting documents and complete a survey. You can also provide feedback to Council via an email to sydneyyoursay at cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au<mailto:sydneyyoursay at cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au>.
Given the resistance to affordable housing levies from some parts of the development industry, people concerned about this issue are encouraged to make a submission.
For those who find reading reports boring you might find this brief video<https://www.instagram.com/reel/DOsiTl_D0SZ/?hl=en> explainer by the the City of Sydney Greens councillors easier to digest.
To get to exhibition, the proposal has been agreed by the City of Sydney Council, the Central Sydney Planning Committee and received approval to exhibit through the State Government Gateway process ... so its not just the Green supporting this.
Council Supports Metro Land Council Housing
Council will provide a $3 million grant to the Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council from its Diverse Housing Fund to build 6-10 homes for Aboriginal elders in Redfern on a site it owns at 36-38 George Street, Redfern. You can see more details of this grant from this report to the Equity and Housing Committee<https://meetings.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/documents/s98237/Grants%20and%20Sponsorship%20-%20Affordable%20and%20Diverse%20Housing%20Fund%20-%20Metropolitan%20Local%20Aboriginal%20Land%20Co.pdf> Report and Council.
This latest decision adds further Aboriginal Affordable Housing to Redfern to address the need to support an ongoing Aboriginal community in Redfern Waterloo.
Jess Miller replaces Zann Maxwell as the City of Sydney Deputy Lord Mayor
Under the arrangement between the Clover Moore Independents (CMI) and the ALP Councillors made after the last election, the Deputy Lord Mayor position has moved from Councillor Zann Maxwell (ALP) to Councillor Jess Miller (CMI).
Electrify 392 Bus Route Petition
There has been ongoing concern about the impact of the 392 bus route on Raglan Street residents. Zann Maxwell has placed a petition on his website to reduce some of the impact of these buses by electrifying the bus on the route. You can support this petition here<https://www.zannmaxwell.com/petitions/support-the-electrification-of-the-waterloo-392>.
Like all such petitions be aware that you are not only signing the petition but also providing your details to the person, group or party organising the petition and that they can use those details for campaigning purposes.
UTS Student Survey on Waterloo Social Housing
A group of students from UTS is currently investigating urban change. They have created a short quiz (under 5 minutes) to gather community insights on social housing in Waterloo. They have asked that we share the survey so that anyone interested can provide input to this student work. The link to the survey is https://utsau.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_bQLPC1dNFtLKgM6
Would you be happy to share the link on your page? We'd really appreciate your support! Regards, Zara.

Geoff
