Hi North Eveleigh people

Just a quick reminder of three consultations happening this week.

*	North Eveleigh Parks
1096616> (Application Number: D/2013/367) This is the UrgbanGrowth
Development Corporation integrated development application for the staged
construction of a Local Park and Pocket Park in the north western part of
the North Eveleigh Precinct, works include pedestrian links to Wilson St,
furniture, terracing and associated retaining walls, community garden,
landscaping, reuse of heritage elements, addition to the Blacksmiths
Workshop and stormwater and demolition works. Exhibition Closes: 6th May
2013.

*	Sydney University Pedestrian and Bicycle Access Strategy Community
Workshops - the University to spend a minimum of $2 million on the
appropriate pedestrian and bicycle upgrades prior to the occupation of the
Business School on-site they will hold two sessions to discuss their initial
ideas and to get community input. Sessions are Wednesday 1 May 5.30-7.30pm,
Foyer, 22 Codrington Street, Darlington and Saturday 4 May 9am-12pm,
Eveleigh Market, Wilson Street, Darlington. (Please See University notice
about consultation below and attached feedback form).

*	1 Lawson Square - Mixed Use Development
<http://majorprojects.planning.nsw.gov.au/index.pl?action=view_job&job_id=52
49> (SSD 5249-2012). This is a state significant development for
alterations and additions to the two existing TNT / GCA towers (while
maintaining the existing building) and construction of additional levels to
form an 18 storey mixed use development comprising retail / commercial and
residential uses; retention of the NSW Police tenancy; basement car parking;
retention of existing allocated parking; and public domain works. Exhibition
Closes 30 April 2013.

The last couple of weeks have seen the NSW Government with three major
reports on exhibition which promise to change the face of planning and
development and potentially will impact on North Eveleigh.

*	A New Planning System for NSW (The White Paper) - The White Paper
and draft legislation are available at
www.planning.nsw.gov.au/newplanningsystem
<https://promo-manager.server-secure.com/ch/2196/pb6g02/574549/3308fs0k.html
> and will be on exhibition until Friday 28 June 2013. On the REDWatch
website you will find some useful background and links on the New Planning
System for NSW White Paper - Until 30 June 2013
<http://www.redwatch.org.au/govt/nsw/nps13/130630wp> . The proposed changes
remove people's ability to quote on 80% of developments, supposedly in
exchange for a greater say up front in strategic plans, like the Metro
Strategy. REDWatch is a member of the Better Planning Network and you can
see their comments on the White Paper and their initial media statements at
Better Planning Network Comments on New Planning System
<http://www.redwatch.org.au/govt/nsw/nps13/bpn> .

*	The Draft Metro Strategy for Sydney to 2031 -
http://strategies.planning.nsw.gov.au/MetropolitanStrategyforSydney.aspx on
exhibition until 31 May 2013. On the REDWatch website you will find an
overview to some of the issues under Draft Metro Strategy Exhibition - until
31 May 2013 <http://www.redwatch.org.au/govt/nsw/nps13/ms2031/130531msredw>
. The new planning system talks about improved community engagement in
strategic plans like this but the Government has put the Metro Strategy,
which in the new system is the Regional Growth Plan for Sydney, on
exhibition before the new planning system with its focus on community
participation is in place. This really brings the Government's commitment to
community engagement in planning into question. The Government should remove
the Metro Strategy from exhibition and reintroduce, with much publicity,
when the new planning system is in place. This document talks about how the
RWA/SMDA has been "addressing social exclusion upfront to make an area more
viable for urban renewal"(p34 footnote 8). The Metro Strategy promises to
support strategic renewal in the highly accessible Central to Eveleigh
corridor (p84) - potentially including North Eveleigh!

*	Future Directions for NSW Local Government -
www.localgovernmentreview.nsw.gov.au/Index.asp?areaindex=LGR
<http://www.localgovernmentreview.nsw.gov.au/Index.asp?areaindex=LGR&index=4
9&acode=GL&mi=1> &index=49&acode=GL&mi=1 this is the report from an
independent review of local Government it proposes City of Sydney being
merged with Woollahra, Waverley, Randwick and Botany Bay and possibly
Marrickville and Leichhardt. Consultations on the paper will be received up
until the end of June 2013.

You can see some of the challenges that the new planning system throws up
for REDWatch and other residents groups in a brief talk Geoff Turnbull gave
to a Sydney Uni forum a couple of weeks ago - REDWatch on the New Planning
System Challenges <http://www.redwatch.org.au/govt/nsw/nps13/130418redw> .
More material about the New Planning System will be added to the REDWatch
website A New Planning System for NSW 2013
<http://www.redwatch.org.au/govt/nsw/nps13> .

Subject: Pedestrian and Cyclist Access Strategy - Community Workshop 1 May
and 4 May

Greetings,

As part of the NSW Planning Assessment Commission's conditions of approval
for the development of the Abercrombie Development Project, The University
of Sydney is committed to providing $2 million dollars for pedestrian and
cyclist upgrades in the Darlington precinct.

The upgrades will increase safety and convenience for pedestrians and
cyclists in the area and will complement other improvement works being
planned by Council. The Department of Planning & Infrastructure has
specified that these works are to have a direct relationship to the
University's Abercrombie project. The University of Sydney has contracted
Parking and Traffic Consultants to identify some initial pedestrian and
cycle opportunities.

Whilst this work is specific to the Abercrombie project, the University is
also currently preparing a Campus Improvement Program 2014-2020 (CIP). The
CIP will address plans to prioritise and upgrade vehicle, cycle and
pedestrian facilities through the Darlington and Camperdown campuses and to
link these with the City of Sydney's planned works.

We also invite your suggestions on the development of these improvements.

We would like to hear what you think and this is a great opportunity for you
to provide valuable feedback to help build on both the City of Sydney's and
the University's goals to support resident's desire to engage in walking and
cycling as a lifestyle choice and to increase the amenity and functionality
of the surrounding neighbourhood.

As a local resident you are invited to attend two community workshops that
are being held in May. Participants will be provided with the initial
findings from our consultant's research and will be able to provide input on
the proposed strategy and works.

The two community workshops will take place on the following dates:

. Wednesday 1 May 5.30 pm - 7.30 pm Foyer 22 Codrington St,
Darlington

. Saturday 4 May 9.00 am - 12 noon Eveleigh Market, Wilson St,
Darlington

The workshops will be of an informal nature and members of the community are
invited to drop by at any time during the hours of operation.

Please also find attached a Feedback Form that you can provide your
comments on the proposed upgrade opportunities. Forms can be deposited in
the box marked Pedestrian and Cyclist Access Strategy Feedback Forms which
will be located in the foyer of Campus Infrastructure and Services, 22
Codrington Street, Darlington from Monday 29th April, 2013.

For further information regarding the Pedestrian and Cycling Strategy please
contact the University on 9351 4324 or email local.community at sydney.edu.au

Best wishes,

The Abercrombie Project Team
